Bloom's Taxonomy quiz

 

     Hi! Today I took the Bloom's Taxonomy quiz. On the quiz, I received a score of 11/12. With taking the quiz, I learned how important it is to be educated on Bloom's Taxonomy when being a teacher. The main focus of Bloom's Taxonomy is to improve student learning. As a teacher, we want to teach in the best way possible and in ways that will result in them succeeding and learning the materials. Bloom's Taxonomy will allow us teachers to create lesson plans that result in our children creating, analyzing, evaluating and much more! Bloom's Taxonomy is great to incorporate when teaching because it will push student's to their full potential and the teacher will be able to determine where a student is strong and where they need help. It can also help determine how much time is needed for something in the classroom. 

One fact that I did not know prior to this quiz was that, although Bloom's Taxonomy can be beneficial, it is not the only model teachers need to use in their classroom in order to be successful!

    Hello! Today we are going to be talking about Bloom's Taxonomy! Today I read the article about Bloom's Taxonomy and then I took a quiz based on the information that I had retained. I really enjoyed learning about this topic and I plan to use it in my classroom when I become a teacher! Bloom's Taxonomy will help me when assessing in the classroom and I cannot wait! 

While reading the article, there were 6 verbs that were discussed. The 6 verbs were... 

Create: design, assemble, construct, conjecture, develop, formulate, author, investigate

Evaluate: appraise, argue, defend, judge, select, support, value, critique, weigh

Analyze: differentiate, organize, relate, compare, contrast, distinguish, examine, experiment, question, test

Apply: execute, implement, solve, use, demonstrate, interpret, operate, schedule, sketch

Understand: classify, describe, discuss, explain, identify, locate, recognize, report, select, translate

Remember: define, duplicate, list, memorize, repeat, state

What is Social Studies? 

 Social studies is described as the “ Integrated study of social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence.” Social studies is used to help us make decisions for the public as citizens. It is used to make decisions in our world that is diverse, democratic and interdependent.

  Why teach Social studies? 

It is important to teach Social studies because it teaches children about government, economics, history, etc. Social studies is important because America is changing constantly and rapidly teaching Social studies will prepare the children to understand and participate effectively in a changing complex world. Learning Social studies will also result in effective citizens, enhance language arts and communication skills, it will help children apply critical thinking and problem solving skills and lastly it will result in positive relationships, teamwork and problem solving skills.

How can we make Social Studies fun?

We can make Social studies fun by creating fun and engaging activities that correlate along with the topic. We can also make Social studies fun by using technology in the classroom. We can use programs such as Google Docs and Google Slides.

                                                             

Chapter 2

Today, teachers are facing the problem of being knowledgable of the content that they are supposed to teach their children. As time goes on, classrooms are getting more and more diverse and it is challenging for teachers to create classroom communities that use instructional strategies that meet the social needs. With diversity changing, other things are changing too such as technology and the social aspects, which is resulting in teachers having to adapt and alter the way that they are teaching.

The ways that Social studies is today has been affected from a historical aspect. Over the past 400 years, elementary and middles schools have been created in uneven stages. There are 5 uneven stages and they are known as, schooling at home, Dame Schools, , special function schools, free public schools, and influences from abroad. The story containing American elementary and middle schools first started in Northwest Europe and then it traveled by immigrants to the colonies throughout England. The immigrants brought tutoring, apprenticeships and self-education to the Americas.

"Parents were expected to teach their children, especially their sons, to read the Bible and to participate in community life. However, not every parent could fulfill this expectation. Some parents were illiterate themselves."  I believe that the Dame Schools was great for both younger children and older children because based on the fact that back then most parent's were illiterate, the Dame School's gave them the opportunity to learn in the proper way and gave them the chance to learn. Dame Schools consisted of the children learning the alphabet, numbers and how to read. I found it really interesting how the teachers would not only teach throughout the day, they would also do their chores! I also found it very interesting how the women who were teaching, were only a little bit more educated than the student's! 

Chapter 3 

Standards are beneficial in the fact that they tell the teachers what the students should be learning. Standards are crucial to teachers because it allows teachers to plan properly based on what the students need to learn. Some examples of standards are: subject matter standards, state standards, federal standards and, the Common Core State Standards. One con of standards is that they don't say how the students will learn them or how the teacher will use that learning. Standards can help me when I become a teacher by allowing me to see what has to be taught and then I can determine what activities and assignments would be the best way to teach it. 

Chapter 3 stated that intergraded curriculum can increase social, critical thinking and communication skills.

 

Models of Teaching

 Models: Models are the most broad instructional practices and they present a philosophical approach to teaching. For a specific instructional emphasis, models are used to structure teaching strategies, methods and skills. 

Strategies: Strategies are used when teaching, to develop how a teacher may teach in order to reach learning objectives successfully. Strategies are used when using models and several strategies can be used.

Methods: Methods can be included with one or more strategy. Methods are put into five instructional strategies. The five instructional strategies are: Direct, Indirect, Interactive, Experiential and Independent study. 

  Examples of Instructional Models: Information processing, Behavioral, Social interaction, personal

Instructional Strategies: Direct, Indirect, interactive, experiential, independent study. 

Examples of Instructional Methods: Case studies, Lecture, stimulations, Inquiry, cooperative learning contracts, focused imaging, debate 

 

Lesson 1- Executive Branch

After finishing my lesson plan, I realized how important it is to create engaging lessons plan when being a teacher. I genuinely enjoyed the way that this lesson plan was formatted and structured. The lesson plan that I completed was made on Google Slides and it consisted of a Quizlet, a Padlet and videos. I personally want to learn by learning platforms because they are fun and they are very engaging. It is boring when listening to a teacher all the time and learning platforms can make the children want to learn more due to the fact that kids are more dependent on technology these days. Technology is advancing day by day, which is creating more options of fun and more engaging ways to learn. I overall felt really engaged when completing this lesson because all of these platforms are easy to use and navigate. The Google Slides also clearly stated information about the topic. 

Lesson #14 reflection

Technology!

  Class was great!

 We started off class by finishing off our get to know you slides and then we jumped right into another activity. We did an activity that gave me the opportunity to describe myself by using the alphabet. For example, for the letter B I put brave and for the letter K, I put kind. With completing this activity, it really opened my eyes and it made me realize that a lot of my classmates have the same characteristics as me. The main gist that I got out of that activity was that although we all experience different things in our lives and that we all may look different, we still have some similarities. After completing the activity, we then moved onto an activity that required us to read two articles that contained information about technology and how students are advancing in technology. With all of the knowledge that was retained from reading the articles, my group and I then created a Google Slides presentation on how kids everyday lives are becoming reliant on technology and how we can incorporate technology when teaching in the classroom. My group concluded that we should incorporate technology in the classroom by using them for presentations by possibly using Google Slides, Google Docs, etc. 

 

FOOD for thought!

 

The first thing that I noticed when looking at the cartoon was the chalkboard. I noticed the chalkboard because within classrooms today, there are usually smart boards. This cartoon shows how technology has advanced. What also really stood out to me was what the little boy said. The little boy said "If you follow me on Twitter, you'd know."  This statement shows that kids and people nowadays communicate through social media and they are lacking communication face to face because they communicate online. I can infer from cartoon that this teacher is old school due to the chalkboard and her handing out of a written assignment about summer.
